So, you need a site built but you really have no clue what to expect to spend. You’re not alone. This is probably the most asked question we get before we scratch the surface of a project. And we totally understand. You want to price shop without having to engage a company too deeply.
Chances are, if you reach out to a web development company looking for a breakdown of what a site will cost, you will probably be met with something like, “Well, it depends on a LOT of factors. We would love to sit down with you and go through what you are looking for in a site before we quote any pricing”. This will then lead to some form of requirements-gathering or a detailed questionnaire; something requiring you to share in pretty good detail what you expect from your site. And here’s why: every single site is so vastly different, requiring a different, unique level of development. Also, each person or company is in a different stage of its digital presence. One may be fully branded while another may require a complete brand creation. One may have the start of a web presence while another may be brand new to the game. Having a ready set price is not only premature, but a bad business model.
At Ramplight, we understand this, but we also know the importance of getting that first quote to you as quickly as possible. We understand the importance of having a solid estimate after only one simple phone call. Here’s how we achieve that.
Asking the right questions up front:
Your time is valuable, so every minute spent in Q and A needs to count. The questions we ask are simple to answer, straightforward and will shed good light on what it is you expect from your site. If you can’t answer them off the bat, we will help by offering ideas and suggestions based on the profile of your business or endeavor. This is where our industry expertise comes in handy.
Understanding your budget at the onset:
This may seem like a no-brainer, but when you miss this valuable bit of info, you are doomed from the start. You may be saying to yourself, “Wait, isn’t this article about getting an idea of what to expect to spend on a site? How would I know what our budget is if you haven’t told me what it will cost?” This is certainly a valid argument. However, everyone knows what their ceiling is. If we spend 30 minutes on the phone with you and throw you a quote of $8900, and the most you were looking to spend was $2500, we’ve just wasted 30 minutes of your time and ours. If you can tell us what you hope to spend, this helps with key factors such as how much to customize, what tools to use and so forth. We understand there are lots of ways to build a site today. With the proliferation of platforms like WordPress, you can customize as little or as much as your budget will allow.
Knowing the Desired Time to Market?
How quickly do you need your site up and running? Believe it or not, this is a determining factor in cost, although not too much. If you need it in less than a week, and you are starting from square one, that means we will need to throw additional man power at the project, sacrificing other projects in the process. A typical site build can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months, depending on complexity and functionality. Knowing what your expectations are on speed to market will also let us know how realistic the project is from the beginning.
Once we have garnered this critical information, usually in a 30 minute phone call, we can then give a pretty accurate estimate for you to use in deciding if Ramplight is the right fit financially.
Here is a simple breakdown of what you may expect from a quote:
- $1,000 to $2,500 – Simple site with less than ten pages and basic functionality and little to no branding. Heavy use of templates and little customization.
- $2,500 to $5,500 – Simple site with less than ten pages, extensive branding and more complex functionality. Use of templates, but moderate customization.
- $5,500 to $10,000 – More complex site with functionality such as e-commerce or user-based activities. Full branding, including full scale site design. Blog capabilities and the ability to manage your own site through content management setup.
- $10,000 and up– Full scale, fully customized solution with all the bells and whistles.
If there is one thing we at Ramplight hope to impart on every single potential client with whom we speak, it’s this. The old adage ‘You get what you pay for’ is completely and utterly appropriate in the crowded Web development market. The Web is chalk full of sub-par sites built by well-meaning individuals trying to make a quick dollar. If you are looking for top notch development at affordable prices, give Ramplight a shot. We would love to hear from you.
